As a follow up to my previous posting (Seth MacFarlane gives us the dirt on the Family Guy movie, the Cleveland Show, and the Empire Strikes Back parody), here’s even more information from Seth MacFarlane.
On the similarity between Family Guy and the Simpsons
“Wow,” Groening said, with a straight face. “Wow. You know, we love Seth. If we weren’t so rich, we would be very depressed.”

On Family Guy’s debt to the Simpsons
“I wouldn’t be sitting here if it wasn’t for The Simpsons,” MacFarlane said.
“It’s so rare that something comes along that completely catches you off-guard. When you think back, The Flintstones was the last really big successful prime time animated show. And then The Simpsons came along and single-handedly reopened that door. I was instantly taken with that show, and still am. It doesn’t hold a candle to any live-action comedy that’s on the air - or is it the reverse?”
On Blue Harvest
“The Star Wars world is pretty much familiar to everyone who watches our show,” MacFarlane said. “Our audience probably knows that movie word-for-word. It’s hard, though. It’s never as easy as it looks to do a parody, and do it well. Lucasfilm was, and still is, particularly generous. It’s very unusual to get that kind of creative licence. They basically said, ‘Go ahead, do it and then send it to us. They had a handful of notes, and that was it. They’re very progressive in that way. They recognize, in this day and age of different forms of media, that it’s perhaps better to embrace this instead of pushing it away and clinging to the old ways. It’s very unusual, though, and not something I can imagine any other company allowing us to do.”
